Although it’s important to be prepared for winter driving, it’s also essential to make sure your car is up to the challenge. Here are some easy tips to ensure your car is safe and reliable all season long.
Battery Maintenance
Batteries are hit particularly hard in the winter. Frigid temperatures interrupt the chemical process, reducing a battery’s cranking power. At around 0° F, a battery will have only half the power it would have if it were 80° F outside.
The best way to make sure you won’t have battery trouble in the winter is to have it professionally tested. Replace Your Windshield Wiper Blades
Windshield wiper blades should be replaced every 6 months to a year, regardless of how often you use them. Although you can stretch your wiper blades’ use out by cleaning the blades periodically with glass cleaner, the rubber will eventually break down. When this happens, you’ll have difficulty clearing your windshield; if the metal frames are making contact with the surface of your windshield, it can become scratched and difficult to see out of. Maximize Your Visibility
It seems common sense, but it’s worth mentioning: if you can’t see out of your windows, you’re putting everyone on the road in danger, including yourself. Use an ice scraper to completely clear the ice off your windows on frosty mornings. If you park outside, putting your wiper blades up in the raised position will prevent them from freezing to the windshield overnight.
During the winter, a lot of dirt, mud, and salt gets kicked up from the road, so you’ll want to make sure your windshield washer reservoir stays filled. We recommend using a winter blend washer fluid that contains an antifreeze agent, so your windshield stays as clear as possible.
It’s also important to have a well-functioning heater; this will ensure your defroster works properly. Keeping your air conditioner well-maintained will help prevent your windshield from fogging up by dehumidifying the air. Lastly, check that your vehicle’s lights are working and that the lenses are clean so other drivers can easily spot you on the road.
Check the Oil
When the temperatures drop, your car’s motor oil becomes thicker, which makes it harder to circulate through your engine. Check your owner’s manual to see what type of oil your manufacturer recommends.
If your car is due for an oil change, have the filter replaced along with the oil. This will ensure your engine receives the right amount of lubrication. An oil change is also a great time to have the heater and radiator hoses inspected for damage, wear, or contamination. If the hoses feel overly soft or brittle, it’s time to have them replaced.
Your coolant should be a 50/50 mixture of antifreeze and water to help protect the system from freezing.
Consider Replacing Your Tires
Finding out your tires are worn out is never fun—especially if you’re stuck in the snow. If your tires are visibly worn and no longer provide traction, don’t put off getting them replaced; your safety could depend on it! Winter tires can also be difficult to find as the season goes on, so it’s best to replace them as early as possible.
If you only have to deal with the occasional snowfall, a set of all-weather tires should do just fine.
