What is Fuel Injection Service—And Why Is It Needed?

The fuel injectors are critical components that play a significant role in the performance and overall functionality of your engine. Fuel injectors are responsible for converting the fuel into a high-pressure spray, which is injected into the engine’s combustion chamber.

When the fuel injectors are clean, this is a very quick and efficient process. The injectors ensure the engine receives the right amount of fuel at the right time. If the fuel injectors get clogged or worn, however, it can significantly affect your engine’s performance.

Understanding the Fuel Injectors

Although there’s some variance between engine makes and models, most engines have one fuel injector per cylinder. For example, if you have a four-cylinder engine, you probably have four fuel injectors.

Once the fuel pump delivers fuel to the engine, the fuel injectors control the amount of fuel that’s injected into the combustion chamber, as well as the timing of the fuel injection. If they release too much fuel, it can cause the engine to flood; too little fuel can cause the engine to stall.

Fuel injectors typically last a long time; however, most manufacturers recommend replacing them every 50,000 to 100,000 miles. Keep in mind, however, that this recommendation can also vary depending on road conditions, driving habits, environmental conditions, and overall vehicle maintenance. Regular tune-ups should also include a fuel injector inspection and diagnosis.

Signs of Clogged Fuel Injectors

Fuel injectors can become worn, faulty, or clogged over time, which can impact the way they function—and the way your engine performs. Here are some common signs you may have one or more dirty or clogged fuel injectors:

  • Rough or loud idling
  • Shaking or rumbling from the engine while idle
  • Engine misfires or stalling
  • Fuel leaks
  • Poor fuel economy
  • The check engine light is on
  • The tachometer needle moves unpredictably

These are all signs that your engine isn’t receiving the correct amount of fuel at the correct time. In some cases, a fuel injector can become so clogged that it’s not able to deliver any fuel to the engine at all.

What’s Included in Fuel Injection Service?

If you’ve noticed any of the above signs of dirty or clogged fuel injectors, it’s important to schedule an appointment for a fuel injection service.

The fuel system consists of a fuel pump, fuel filter, and injectors, all of which should be inspected during a fuel injection service. The service also includes:

  • Checking the connections, fuel and vacuum lines, fuel rails, and the pressure regulator
  • Cleaning the fuel injectors and throttle body air intakes
  • Pressure testing the fuel pump and system
  • Decarbonizing other parts of the system, such as the exhaust valves
  • Exhaust emissions tests to ensure the system is functioning correctly

The accumulation of dirt, carbon, and varnish in a car’s fuel system can eventually lead to damage to other parts and components. Getting a fuel injection cleaning helps reduce fuel consumption and prolongs the life of your vehicle, as well as prevents your warranty from being voided. In addition, it can save money in the long run by reducing the need for repairs and reducing the chance of breakdowns.
