The High Cost of Auto Repairs: Why It’s Important to Find an Auto Repair Shop You Can Trust

Although inflation has eased somewhat since 2022, many households still struggle financially when it comes to handling unexpected expenses—especially auto repairs. Stagnant wages, along with the rising cost of parts and services, mean many drivers don’t have the money to fix their cars if they break down.

Why Are Auto Repair Costs Increasing?

Recent surveys conducted by the Minneapolis Fed have shown how vehicle repair costs have skyrocketed in recent years. Despite inflation lowering by 3.7% in August 2023, vehicle repair costs surged by 17%, with maintenance services (like oil changes) seeing a 9% increase over the same period.

Several long-term and recent factors have contributed to these cost increases. First, supply chain disruptions and manufacturing constraints that occurred during the pandemic led to a limited supply of new vehicles on the market.

With fewer new vehicles available, the cost of buying a new car significantly increased—which in turn led to more consumers opting for used cars or holding onto their existing cars longer than they might have otherwise. Since older vehicles typically need more frequent repairs, this created a higher demand for auto repair services and replacement parts.

The growing complexity of technology in modern cars has also played a role in rising costs. Unlike vehicles of the past, today’s cars are a blend of machinery and computer technology. More complex systems mean vehicles often take longer to repair and at higher costs.

To compound the issue, supply chain and production disruptions have made it harder for repair shops to get the parts needed for repairs. With more older vehicles on the road than ever before, it’s also become harder to salvage parts. Both of these factors have contributed to a nationwide parts shortage.

In addition, tight labor market conditions have led to a decline in the number of automotive technicians and service workers, which has significantly affected the ability to provide timely service. Many auto repair shops have had to limit the work they can take on because they simply don’t have the help they need, resulting in longer wait times for appointments.
